Legislating to Control Edmonton Bars

I find it amusing that today’s police officers have had to resort to using legislation to deal with unruly bars.   They have even put together a team to collect information so that the bar owner can be punished for actions that most often take place outside of their establishment.   In my day, we simply became a presence at that bar.  We ticketed those that needed ticketing, and sent home those that were getting drunk.  They soon got the message that this was not a bar to bring their weapons, and bad attitudes to.

To resort to making the bar owners responsible for the actions that happen outside of their bars tells me that today’s police are incapable of controlling the streets.  They should be embarrassed.

Bar owners certainly have a role to play in this.  They can set the tone of their establishment.  Door staff need to be trained, bar staff taught not to over-serve.   There was a time they use to water down a drunk’s drinks to control them, but the government stopped them from doing that.

One local bar used to photocopy patron IDs, so if there was a problem inside, they had the information of who was present when it happened, but the Alberta Privacy Commissioner put a stop to this practice.   I really feel sorry for the bar owners on this issue.
